How to Update Sonus/NET UX Gateway Firmware

Published 24/11/2012 - 0 Comments

Quick post as I’ve been asked about this a few times. Here are the steps to upgrade the Sonus UX1000 / UX2000 (the web interface is the same on both).

The gateways have a A/B Partition system. This is nice as you can upgrade the inactive partition ready to reboot to it out of hours and if you have any issues you can roll back to the partition with the old firmware prior to the upgrade.

Here you can see out of the box this gateway has 2.1.1 on both partitions. You can see from the “Active Partition” which is the current active.

You can always download the latest firmware from the Net site if you have a valid service contract.

Sonus/Net do their own testing after Microsoft release Cumulative Updates for Lync, you should be keeping your gateway up to date alongside with you Lync/SBA CU patching

(you may need a support contract to reach that page).

UX qualification chart (at time of publishing blog post)

Min UX Release Max UX Release Release Notes Service Advisory CU Download link
Lync 2010 CU4 version 1.3.2 build 89
version 2.0.1 build 118
Latest UX 1.3.2 Release Notes
UX 2.0.1 Release Notes
CU4 SBA Update
Lync 2010 CU5 version 2.0.2 build 132 Latest UX 2.0.2 Release Notes CU5 SBA Update
Lync 2010 CU6 version 2.1.2 build 150 Latest UX 2.1.2 Release Notes CU6 SBA Update

If you expand the partition you can see “Upload Patch”, above both the partitions you can see “Upload Firmware”. You want Upload Firmware, *NOT* Upload Patch. When you choose upload firmware it will automatically upload to the inactive partition.

If you choose upload patch by mistake this is what you will get.

“Failed – Invalid Image Type: Either firmware image file was provided in a patch upload request or patch file was provided in a firmware upload request.”

Now partition 2 has the latest firmware, but is not active. At this point even if the gateway is rebooted it will reboot to the current firmware.

When you click “Set Active”.

Reboot required.

Now you can see the active partition is 2 and the version is 2.2.0 build 181.
